Gigging on the Current River

Gigging on the Current River is more than a Fall outdoor pastime, it is a very competitive sport for many and a family tradition for most.
You will find most outdoors men in the Missouri Ozarks spending the first two weeks of September getting their boat and lights ready for the first night of gigging season which is September 15th.
Gigging is not only enjoyed by men, but alot of women are very good at it also.  But most of the time you will find the women on the bank visiting with friends and preparing potatoes and hushpuppies for the  highly anticipated fish fry.
As the giggers pull onto the bank they quickly begin the task of cleaning and scoring of the fish.
Before long the mouth watering aroma of deep fried fish and onions fill the air.  And don't forget dessert!  No one can pass up those tasty deep fried biscuits with butter and apple butter.
As the evening winds down everyone has generally eaten too much, but a feeling of bonding with family and those from generations past, leaves them anxiously awaiting the next gigging trip.
